01 Understanding your equipment
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This session provides a comprehensive overview of Flexible and Navigable Suction Ureteral Access Sheath (FANS) in ureteroscopy. Dr. Steffi Yuen will discuss the different types of FANS sheaths, their advantages and disadvantages, and techniques for optimal navigation within the pelvicalyceal system (PCS). The session also highlights experimental evidence on sheath properties and the critical role of irrigation and suction pressures in achieving better outcomes.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand the types of FANS sheaths available and their specific advantages & limitations.
- Master the optimal techniques for navigating the PCS efficiently.
- Explore experimental findings on sheath properties and their clinical impact.
- Gain insights into the importance of irrigation and suction pressures in improving visibility, stone clearance, and procedural safety.

Instructor
Dr. Steffi Yuen
Dr. Steffi Yuen graduated from the University of Hong Kong. Since joining the urology faculty team at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and New Territories East Cluster, Dr Yuen’s main area of interest encompasses endoluminal endourology (BPH and stones) and minimally invasive surgery.
Dr Steffi Yuen has brought about international exchange and collaborations as a Japanese Urological Association (JUA) scholar. She has also completed the International Fellowship in Robotic surgery, ECIRS, PCNL, RIRS at Seoul National University Hospital’s Specialized Endoluminal Endourology & Stone Center under Professor Sung Yong Cho.
Dr Yuen is committed to maintaining the highest standards of clinical care and promoting patient awareness of urological health via various channels, including social media. She has helped built and pioneered the LUTS/BPE pathway in the hospital cluster, bringing together the whole spectrum of MIST – from Rezum, Urolift, iTIND, Aquablation to enucleation of prostates to LUTS/BPE patients. She is also a certified trainer for Rezum and Asia's first certified trainer for iTIND.
Her vast exposure gives her first-hand experience in the latest technologies, upcoming trends and skills in endoluminal endourology. She is excited to bring about this new era of endourology - the emerging robotic RIRS and PCNL platforms, innovations of flexible ureteroscopes, next generation of flexible and navigable ureteral access sheaths (FANS) and laser technology.
